South Woodham Ferrers in Essex is a product of the 20th century, so recent are its origins that it was not until 1913
that the name South Woodham Ferrers was formally adopted to identify the settlement emerging in the southern part of Woodham Ferrers parish
as being separate from the original village of Woodham Ferrers, one mile to the north.
The name Woodham is said to derive from two Saxon words,`Wuda` meaning a wood and `Ham` meaning a farm or homestead.
In order to distinguish this manor from the nearby Woodham Mortimer and Woodham Walter, the family name of Henry de Ferrers,
the manor`s first Norman lord was adopted.
At the southern edge of the manor, where the low-lying land is embraced on three sides by the tidal waters of the River Crouch
and the two creeks of Fenn Creek and Clementsgreen Creek,is the area known as South Woodham Ferrers.
South Woodham Ferrers has an attractive town centre, with some outstanding old buildings,
and a good range of shops and other facilities.
Like many East Anglian towns, South Woodham Ferrers grew from the needs of many people who earned their living in the city of London.
Due to high cost and lack of housing, they needed to live and commute from outside of London.
South Woodham Ferrers is only an hours train ride from the city.
Some information used, was supplied from the book
"South Woodham Ferrers. (A Pictorial History)"
By John Frankland.
